What is an underlying question that gives form to your work or interest in this field?
How can we, as humanity, create those social, political
and spiritual concepts and structures that will best allow us to live
in a caring, sharing way in which we all feel we belong, and in which
every individual can flourish to their fullest extent?
What is your personal experience of collective
wisdom in groups?
I have been a member of several groups over the years
that have discussed and promoted ideas and the practice of intentional
communities and how to create a better society.
What is it about the work in this field that excites
you and connects you to your own deepest self?
The deepest spiritual connection to all things, through
love and respect, animates and informs all I do. All my books are intended
to promote ideas and debates about who we are and where we are going.
Those ideas are my life and whole being.
Please provide a brief storyline or snapshot of
what brought you to this work.
I was born in southern Africa, then moved to England,
where I developed a strong spiritual and political awareness. I have
traveled to India 3 times, to explore Buddhism and Vedanta, as well
as the social structures of Indian villages and cities. I began writing
poetry, short stories and novels that reflected the issues I saw around
me – issues of disempowerment, despair and dispossession. I traveled
around the world studying different spiritual traditions in Africa,
the South Pacific, Asia, Europe, and North America. I have always been
deeply interested in both personal transformation and social change,
I spent 8 days with the Dalai Lama in the Himalayas, spent time in a
Tibetan monastery, journeyed for a whole summer in a motorhome around
the American High West (and wrote a travelogue and collection of deeply
spiritual poems from that experience). I am a religious iconoclast,
who does not believe in gods or heavens or hells, but in each of us
pursuing his or her own path to a universal connection with all. I believe
strongly in local community empowerment, sustainability, environmental
responsibility and minimal centralized government.
