What is an underlying question that gives form to your work or interest in this field?
How can we come closer to experiencing and acting upon
an awareness of being one living entity?
What is your personal experience of collective
wisdom in groups?
I have hosted many World Café events where diverse
groups of people are invited to explore questions that matter deeply
to them. I am especially interested in Cafés for interfaith groups,
neighbors and multi-generational groups. I have witnessed a group's
ability to be much wiser collectively, than individually. I have also
explored the role of art in providing an opportunity for collective
image/meaning making. I am currently developing an exhibit/Café
focusing on what we can learn from the events surrounding hurricane
Katrina.
What is it about the work in this field that excites
you and connects you to your own deepest self?
As I entered my late 50's I moved into a time in my life
where personal achievement and drive have slipped away. I am excited
when I can tune in to larger perspectives and be fully present to others.
Please provide a brief storyline or snapshot of
what brought you to this work.
Once, on a Vision Quest, I found myself so still that
the voices in my head were silent. I asked the Universe, "Am I
supposed to do something really big in the world?" and I heard
the answer: "How can you possibly know what's really big in the
world?" I like that answer. Hearing it shifted me from feeling
a pressure to achieve to an allowing - noticing how small things, attitudes,
ways of being with people might be the fulfillment of a larger purpose.
As a visual recorder at meetings I learned to listen
deeply and translate ideas into images. This also served to focus me
in the moment, enjoying a supporting role rather than striving for center
stage.
How would you like to be available to others in
this field?
I am happy to talk with others, mentor in World Café
planning or hosting as well as mentoring fledgling graphic recorders.
I am interested in exploring ways we can combine visual art to foster
group wisdom experiences.
