What is an underlying question that gives form
to your work or interest in this field?
How to redefine the relationship of individual to the
group: how is it possible that in becoming One Among Many, an individual
in a group becomes more oneself, more alive and awake to Self, even
as the collective becomes aware of its transformational power for Unity
and unlimited Creativity?
What is your personal experience of collective
wisdom in groups?
For more than 13 years, I have been a member of Vistar
Foundation, a Center for Collective Consciousness, in Stamford,
Connecticut. For years up till then, I had been working in groups, mostly
as a director of theater and opera ensembles, and also as part of a
TV writing team. But Vistar focused inner yearnings for Self Knowledge,
for Identity, and in this group setting, I have been privileged to the
ramifications for working on oneself, with others and for the Source
of it all…and the massive creativity available in this kind of
work. Along the way this has meant exploring what it means to be mirrors
for each other (very quickly one is challenged to look at oneself, and
compare that picture to the maturity of what Rumi calls “A True
Human Being.”) and to gradually wake up to the larger picture
and the larger need for us all to work together for Self-Knowledge,
for Unity, for Identity, even for the survival of this world.
As part of this sustained involvement with others over time, I have
grown, through Grace, not only personally and spiritually, but have
also moved with this band of wisdom wizards to unexpected heights of
creativity, group awakenings and transformations …which include
travel and settings and experiences beyond my wildest imagination. I
am totally dedicated to the Vistar System, and the Vistar Method of
Communication® (VMC) which makes true communication with others
possible, while accessing one’s truest Self. And I am awed by
the creativity which pours through the VMC…as it has for festivals
and for Vistar’s theater ensemble, Voicepoint. And I am so curious
as to the experiences of others in this field…especially where
people are meeting face to face…we meet 3 times a week, more if
we have a performance…year in and out.
What is it about the work in this field that excites
you and connects you to your own deepest self?
Direct experience with the Grace that comes through
the field that arises in collective consciousness…with the talents
that are revealed hitherto unknown, and also with the maturity that
arises when one sees what has been standing in the way of true growth.
Ego cannot go on the trip unscathed, and it is actually ego deflation
rather than “empowerment” which allows access to the field
where newness and creativity are palpable and unlimited.
Please provide a brief storyline or snapshot of
what brought you to this work.
From the time I was 6, I was doing plays. Coming together
with others to “make believe”, to sing together in choruses,
to make music together…then to add sets, costumes, sparkly jewels…this
has always been magic. Meanwhile…I was always present to a private
sense of the Sacred: an uncle who was a Vedanta swami, meditating at
our house….making stained glass windows in 5th grade with its
opening to luminous sacred art, singing in choirs, the Christmas pageant
and crèches, Quaker Meetings, A Wrinkle in Time, Gurdjieff’s
In Search of the Miraculous…. And a yearning to bring the two
worlds together without knowing how. Professionally, I tried to make
theater the sacred space, to some success, but eventually ego took it:
there was a dustiness and a draining. There were successes, but still
a yearning, and dissatisfaction.
At one particularly dry place in 1993, I came across
Julia Cameron’s Artist’s Way, as have many, and started
doing “morning pages.” Strange connections began to be made.
A theater friend gave word of musician-metaphysician, Dr. Kenneth G.
Mills, with unsettling “unfoldments.” The same friend mentioned
Vistar was beginning. Knowing nothing, I brought my husband. We met
founders Ron and Victoria Friedman. Magic. We met others. Magic. We
stayed. Magic. That was 1994. We were home, and have been exploring
awakening and the Field ever since.
How would you like to be available to others in
this field?
I would like others to know about Vistar, and the VMC.
As a collective with experience in this field, we feel that we have
much, individually and as a group, to offer the field. We are actively
offering the Vistar Method of Communication® out as a tool which
can breaking down the barriers in communication in groups, in daily
